‘The brilliant young musician of Treforest’: Morfydd Owen (1891-1918)

10:30AM

Pontypridd Museum

Dr Rhian Davies
Morfydd Owen was one of the most gifted and versatile musicians that Wales has produced, and her premature death was regarded as an incalculable loss. This illustrated presentation will consider Morfydd’s formative years in Treforest, reconstruct her remarkable career, and place her in the context of other Welsh women musicians from the fourteenth century forward.
Rhian Davies is a historian and curator whose research has restored several composers to the repertoire. Her advocacy for Morfydd Owen, including television documentaries and a pictorial biography Yr Eneth Ddisglair Annwyl / Never So Pure a Sight, has led to a radical reappraisal of Morfydd’s significance and performances of her music worldwide.
